However, our current iteration is also FUCKING TERRIBLE at playing the opponent and their team specific / QB / play caller style. Our current iteration of our play calling style is FUCKING GREAT at playing the cards and consistently putting us into the technically optimal play. It’s like in poker - play the opponent not the cards.
Those disrupt plays, those total play call shifts that unsettle the opponent. Coaches need to instead learn how to feel them out and make the appropriate OVERALL call in that moment, not just the one that, by the numbers, is optimal, but is also appropriate for the moment at hand. There’s no “perfect scheme” adjustment that can be called to guarantee those momentum shifting points in a game. Nothing on the D side seemed to have been changed to address the mindset changes that need to be done to fix this type of issue. This is my only solid eye test take away from the season. That's my optimism for the day, let's hope history repeats. If history holds true, the Bills will definitely lose some talent due to the cap, but after those 3 years of disappointment will finally secure the elusive Lombardi. Pundits begin thinking neither team will ever win it all despite having a superstar QB. Both teams bow out in the divisional at home to an AFC North team (Steelers and Bengals). Both teams were overwhelming SB favorites and expected to finally get it done. Which means the 2005 Colts are the 2022 Bills. Both teams were expected to take the next step with their SB aspirations, but both bowed out in the Divisional to the same teams on the road as the year before: to the Patriots and Chiefs, respectively. The 2004 Colts were basically the 2021 Bills. This is similar to the 2020 Bills finally winning a playoff game, ending at the hands of the AFC powerhouse Chiefs in the AFC Championship. Peyton had lost his first 3 playoff starts and it wasn't until 2003 they finally broke through with a postseason win, ultimately ending at the hands of the AFC powerhouse Patriots in the AFC Championship. The Colts of the Manning era were known as perennial playoff underachievers. I know some of us are still mourning the missed opportunities from the Bills this season, but something I thought about last night are the parallels this Bills team had with the Colts of the mid 2000s.
